Some people like their sundae’s plain while others like them a little more dressed up. No matter which way you like to eat your sundae’s, you can customize this recipe too to fit your taste. Chopped nuts can be added to the batter along with the chocolate chips or even sprinkled over the top to add a nice nutty flavor. Vanilla ice cream is a perfect topping to this dessert, and adding a caramel or fruity drizzle followed by whipped cream really brings this recipe to the next level.
This is one of the best dessert recipes that you could make. While it is extremely similar to a chocolate lava cake, you don’t have to flip this recipe when it’s done, and you can spoon all that delicious fudgy sauce over some ice cream and your cake when you go to plate it! You won’t need to go out to get that hot fudge sundae fix anymore when you can make this recipe right in your own kitchen!

Cooking Tips
There is supposed to be a lot of sauce on the bottom. If you want yours less runny and more set up, use less water on the top. Cut ¼ cup water and see if it makes the consistency less runny.
Make this recipe ahead of time and store in the fridge. Just wait to add the hot water until right before you pop it in the oven.
Keep in mind that if you are adding some sort of harder candy like M&M’s, Reece’s, etc, they may sink to the bottom and become part of the sauce. Also, pulling the cake out of the oven halfway through baking could cause it to not set up correctly, so be aware of that too.

IN THE FREEZER: Allow cooling completely before storing. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 months in the freezer. Allow to defrost before reheating, or serve it up frozen!

I have made the Betty Crocker version of this for years, but it doesn’t have the Chocolate chips added. I think the chocolate chips gives it an even better taste. Thank you for sharing this recipe. It’s wonderful!

Thank you for this recipe! I used almond flour instead of all-purpose flour and Splenda instead of sugar and it still turned out perfect. We ate it warm with vanilla ice cream! Yummy!

Opps, realized I don't have a 8" glass pan. Can I use a my 9/13 & double the recipe? Also can I replace the water for coffee?
Shauna says
Yes, you should be able to double the recipe and use a 9x13. Since it's a different amount, just watch the cook time and make sure it's done. You may need to add a few minutes of cook time. As far as substituting coffee for water, that should be totally fine! It's still a clear liquid so it should work just the same!
