BLUEBERRY LEMON CREAM CHEESE DANISH
Oh boy are you guys in for a treat today. I'm sharing one of the easiest and most delicious breakfast recipes that you can whip up in no time at all.
This recipe is budget friendly and pairs perfectly with eggs and a cup of coffee, or orange juice. It comes in at just under $10 for 24 servings.
You could serve this recipe on the weekends, during the holidays, for Easter brunch, or as dessert after dinner.
SHOULD CREAM CHEESE DANISH BE REFRIGERATED
Everyone has an opinion on this I'm sure. I don't know what the CDC would recommend so I'm going to tell you what I do if that's okay.
I refrigerate my cream cheese danishes. I'm not gonna lie -- I am weird about food and so is my husband. There is something about letting the cream cheese in the danish sit on the counter that I just can't wrap my brain around. I've had food poisoning before (when I was 14 years old -- don't ask how old I am now) and I do all I can to prevent it from happening again.
I'd love to hear your thoughts. Do you leave your danishes on the counter, or do you pop them in the refrigerator too? Let me know in the comments below!
CAN CREAM CHEESE DANISH BE FROZEN
Yes, these danishes can be frozen with a little bit of prep and the right bags. Make sure to separate the danishes using parchment paper. Make sure they are all the way cooled and at room temperature before putting them in bags.
Also use heavy duty freezer bags and make sure to get all of the extra air out of the bag. Don't forget to label your bag with the date and what you are freezing.
When you are ready to eat a danish let it sit on the counter and come to room temperature. Or pop that little baby in the microwave because who can wait for one of these to thaw all by itself.
WHAT OTHER KINDS OF CHEESE DANISH CAN YOU MAKE AT HOME
While Blueberry Cream Cheese Danish are the family favorite, Strawberry Lemon is a close runner up!
What I love about this recipe is that the base can stay the same every time you make homemade danish for your family. Just swap out the topping and you'll be surprised at how much you'll fall in love with each recipe variation.
Here are a few different types of danish filling that will wow your taste buds:
- Cherry Pie Filling
- Fresh Strawberries mixed with sugar
- Apple Pie Filling
- Raspberry Preserves
- Chocolate Chips
- Lemon Curd
- Applebutter
- Canned Peaches
- Don't forget - you can always just go with plain cream cheese!
I'd love to hear in the comments below what different types of topping you made for your friends and family!
PHILADELPHIA CREAM CHEESE
For this recipe I went full fat cream cheese! I'm not gonna lie -- this breakfast is a little bit sinful and I love every last bite. I'm not going to tell you how many I ate while I was taking pictures for you guys.
Let's just say it was a lot. They are that good!
You could lighten this recipe up a bit by using low fat cream cheese if you wanted, but I'm serious when I say that regular Philadelphia Cream Cheese works perfectly for this recipe. If it's not on sale pick up the store brand and save yourself a dollar where you can.
HOW MANY INGREDIENTS ARE IN A HOMEMADE DANISH
You aren't going to believe this. There are only 8 total ingredients in these easy to make cream cheese danishes. I'm not joking when I say you can have these on the table in 20 minutes start to finish. You probably already have everything on hand that you need to make these for breakfast, or dessert.
- 1 8-oz Block Cream Cheese
- 2 Tubes Flaky Crescent Rolls
- ½ Tsp Vanilla Extract
- ½ Cup Sugar
- 1 Can Blueberry Pie Filling
- 1 Cup Powdered Sugar
- ½ Tbsp Lemon Zest
- 3 Tbsp Whole Milk
- ¼ Cup Slivered Almonds (Optional)
HOW DO YOU MAKE A CREAM CHEESE DANISH
There are only a few easy steps that you will need to do in order to get this recipe ready to make. The first thing that I suggest is taking the cream cheese out of the refrigerator as soon as you decide you are going to make these. It's always easier to combine cream cheese and sugar when it's not right out of the refrigerator. But if you forget (like I did) that's okay too. You'll just have to use your hand mixer for a few extra minutes.
You'll need your hand mixer like I mentioned above, a zester for your lemon, a rubber spatula, a 9x13 baking sheet, and parchment paper. That's it!
DIRECTIONS
First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
In a large bowl using a hand mixer, beat cream cheese, sugar and vanilla extract until smooth. Use a rubber spatula to clean the sides of the bowl as you are mixing. Set cream cheese mixture aside.
Open only one package of crescent rolls and remove them from the tube. Do not unroll them, instead keep them in a long cylinder shape and place on a cutting board. (The crescent rolls will dry out and not shape easily if left on the counter. This is why we recommend cooking in batches).
Using a sharp knife, cut the long cylinder into 12 equal pieces.
Using your fingers and thumbs, flatten each round circle in the middle. Place each circle on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper about 2 inches apart.
Using a small spoon, place a small amount of cream cheese in the center of each crescent roll.
Using a small spoon, place a small amount of blueberry pie filling on top of the cream cheese filling. Make sure to have at least 3 blueberries on each danish or they will look flat and not full of fruit.
Bake in the oven for 10-11 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown.
Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes.
Drizzle each danish with the lemon glaze and serve warm.
Open your second tube of crescent rolls and repeat steps.
