I don't understand why Americans refer to everything fried as chicken fried, it's not chicken for gods sake it's steak. So why not say deep fried steak because that's what it is..

It is called chicken fried because it is battered and fried like fried chicken, which is deep fried only by lazy or incompetent cooks.
