Not everyone likes raisins in their cake, and that’s okay. You could add cranberries instead or even finely grated carrots, a finely diced apple, or crushed pineapple that has been well-drained. Oatmeal, coconut, and pumpkin are delicious additions as well. If you aren’t a fan of walnuts you could substitute pecans or your favorite kind of nut.
Want to sweeten up your cake? Add in one-half to a full cup of chocolate chips. You could use milk chocolate, semi-sweet, or dark chocolate chips. Don’t feel limited to baking your cake in a 9x13 pan. You could also bake this recipe as muffins or in a bundt cake pan.
While this cake tastes delicious slathered in a layer of cream cheese frosting, there are other topping choices as well. You could dust the cake with powdered sugar or drizzle a thin glaze over the top.

Cranberries, finely grated carrots, oatmeal, coconut, diced apple, pumpkin, and chocolate chips are all delicious additions.
What toppings can I use on my cake?
Applesauce cake tastes wonderful with cream cheese icing, a glaze of powdered sugar icing, or a sprinkle of powdered sugar. Chopped walnuts or pecans make for a nice presentation.
Can this cake be frozen?
If you plan to freeze the cake, do not frost the cake until you are ready to serve it. Wrap the unfrosted cake well and store it in a freezer-safe container for two to three months.
How to Store Applesauce Cake
IN THE FRIDGE: Cream cheese frosting should not be left out at room temperature. Store leftover applesauce cake in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.
IN THE FREEZER: Unfrosted cake can be wrapped in plastic wrap and stored in a freezer-safe container in the freezer for 2 to 3 months. Thaw cake in the refrigerator and then frost if desired.

This recipe is so good. My son, his girlfriend and my grandson went nuts over this. I made the cake with diced apples, no raisins and no clove ( I hate clove), and I didn't add the cinnamon to the frosting, but I did sprinkle cinnamon on top of it. Otherwise, made this as written. I'm telling you, I can't imagine an applesauce cake being better than this.
