Apple Fries
Tart apples deep-fried and coated in cinnamon sugar are super yummy and served fresh and warm. These apple fries are a sweet snack that you can enjoy any time of the day.
Apple fries are warm with a soft, tender bite and a bit of crispiness. They can be served as a dessert with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Or enjoy them at room temperature for an after-school snack. You could even serve this as a fruit side dish with any meal.
Sprinkle powdered sugar over your fries for a pretty, dusted garnish. Serve the fried apples with a caramel dipping sauce, or drizzle the warm sauce over the platter of apple fries. Or try them with a sweet, vanilla whipped cream. For extra flair, sprinkle a tiny bit of cinnamon over the peaks of the whipped cream.
Apple Fries Ingredients
- Apples - tart and crisp apples like Granny Smith, Pink Lady, or Honeycrisp
- Milk - whole milk
- Flour
- Sugar
- Cornstarch
- Cinnamon
- Vegetable oil
The apples are the stars here, so be sure to pick a tart and crisp variety of apples. Granny Smith will be the most tart, even verging on sour, made sweeter with the sugar-cinnamon coating. If you like less tang, pick up some Pink Lady apples or Honeycrisp. You don’t want your apple slices to be too thin or too thick, so keep your apple slices between ½ inch and 1-inch for the best results.
Fry your apples in oil that has a high smoking point. In addition to vegetable oil, other good oils to use are peanut oil, canola oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, or corn oil. In addition to cinnamon, you could also substitute apple pie spice for this yummy dessert.
Serve your apple fries with a variety of dips that people can mix and match. Try caramel dip, cheesecake dip, marshmallow dip, or chocolate peanut butter dip.
How To Make Apple Fries
FIRST STEP: Peel, core, and slice your apples into ½-inch - ¾-inch slices. Place them in a large bowl and pour over the milk. Toss to coat. Set aside.
SECOND STEP: In a pie plate or shallow dish for dredging, combine the flour, cornstarch, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon.

THIRD STEP: In a small bowl, combine 3 tablespoons sugar with ½ teaspoon cinnamon. Stir, then set aside.
FOURTH STEP: Take about 6-8 apple slices out of the milk, let them drip off any excess milk, and place them into the flour mixture. Toss them gently to evenly coat on all sides. Place them on a large plate or tray, and repeat until all the apple slices are coated in the flour mixture.
FIFTH STEP: Add ¼ cup of the vegetable oil to a medium-sized skillet that is set to medium heat. Place a paper towel-lined rimmed baking sheet, or large plate, next to your stovetop. This is where you will place your apple slices once fried to drain excess oil.
SIXTH STEP: Fry 6-8 coated apple slices on each side for 1-1½ minutes per side, or until lightly golden. Transfer fried apple slices onto the paper towel-lined baking sheet. Sprinkle with the cinnamon-sugar mixture, then transfer to a serving plate.
SEVENTH STEP: Repeat until all apple slices are fried and sprinkled with the cinnamon-sugar mixture. **See the tip about adding fresh oil about halfway through the frying process**
How Big Should The Apple Slices Be?
It is highly recommended to keep the apple slices no smaller than ½ inch wide and not as big as 1 inch. If they are too thin, they will get too soft with frying. If they are too thick, then there will still be a crunch to the apples.
How Do I Add Fresh Oil Halfway Through Frying?
After frying about a third to half of the apple slices, drain the oil and place a fresh ¼ cup of oil in the pan to fry the remaining apple slices.
Why Do I Need To Add Fresh Oil?
As you fry the apples, some of the batter will come off into the hot oil and make it very dark. As a result, the apple slices will look darker. This is normal when frying anything with a coating, but since this recipe makes so many apple fries, changing out the oil will help.
How To Store Apple Fries
These apples do not store well as leftovers. Make and serve only what you plan on eating the same day.
