Garlic Bread Ingredients
- Bread - loaf of French bread
- Butter - salted butter
- Salt - sea salt
- Garlic - freshly minced garlic
- Parsley - dried parsley or fresh parsley
French bread is the classic choice for making garlic bread, but you could also try some different bread options including baguettes, Italian bread, rosemary bread, or cheese bread. Garlic bread can go from light to burnt to a crisp very quickly, so it’s important to watch the bread carefully when under the broiler.
This garlic bread is wonderfully buttery, but if you prefer less butter you can half the amount of butter and/or garlic. As raw garlic can be sharp and bitter, keeping the bread wrapped in foil and heating slowly gives the garlic some time to cook in the oven, leaving it with a mellower flavor.
Take your garlic bread up a notch by adding melted cheese. Mozzarella or cheddar would both be tasty choices. Simply add the cheese to the bread just before you put the halves under the broiler to melt it.
How to Make Garlic Bread
FIRST STEP: Preheat the oven to 425°F.
SECOND STEP: Slice loaf of French bread in half lengthwise.
THIRD STEP: Stir together softened butter, sea salt, minced garlic, and parsley.
FOURTH STEP: Use a spatula to spread half of the butter mixture onto the bread loaf. Place the two halves of the bread together. Wrap tightly with aluminum foil and place in the oven to bake for 30 minutes.

FIFTH STEP: While the bread is heating, melt the remaining butter mixture in a small saucepan until the garlic is fragrant (2-3 minutes).
SIXTH STEP: After 30 minutes, unwrap the bread to make sure the butter is melted, and the bread is hot all the way through. If you’d like to crisp or toast the top of the bread a bit, place the two halves face up on a baking sheet. Broil for 2-3 minutes or until toasted.
SEVENTH STEP: Brush or drizzle melted butter mixture over the toasted bread for extra garlic butter.
EIGHTH STEP: Sprinkle additional minced parsley over the bread if desired.
What kind of bread can I use?
A soft French bread is the classic choice for garlic bread, but you could also use a good baguette, Italian bread, rosemary bread, or cheese bread.
Can I add cheese to the garlic bread?
Melted cheese is a delicious addition to garlic bread. Add mozzarella, cheddar, or even a sprinkle of parmesan cheese.
What herbs should I use on garlic bread?
Parsley, chervil, tarragon, oregano, and rosemary are all herbs that can be sprinkled on the garlic bread. You could also add a pinch of flaky sea salt or red pepper flakes for some heat.
How to Store Garlic Bread
ON THE COUNTER: Store leftover garlic bread in a large resealable bag for up to 24 hours. It is not recommended to keep the bread in the refrigerator.
IN THE FREEZER: To make garlic bread ahead of time, the bread could be frozen after the third step before baking. Wrap the bread in foil and freeze it for up to 6 months. When you’re ready to bake, let the bread thaw completely before following the rest of the steps above.
REHEATING: Wrap garlic bread in foil and reheat it in the oven. Reheat the garlic bread in a 350°F oven for 10 to 15 minutes until warmed through.
