WHAT INGREDIENTS DO YOU NEED TO MAKE THIS GREEN BEAN AND TATER TOT CASSEROLE
Believe it or not, this recipe only uses simple ingredients that come together quickly.
Here’s what you’ll need to get started:
- frozen or canned green beans, boiled and drained
- fresh mushrooms, chopped
- butter
- celery stalk, chopped into little bitty pieces
- yellow onion
- mayonnaise
- heavy cream
- Salt to taste
- ground black pepper
- minced garlic, divided
- monterey / colby jack cheese
- mozzarella cheese
- ground beef, I used 85/15 Organic from Costco
INGREDIENT SUBSTITUTIONS AND ADDITIONS
GREEN BEANS: In this recipe I usually opt for frozen green beans from Costco. I've found that they are good quality and are so easy to use. However, you can use canned green beans if you'd like. Just be careful when stirring so they don't fall apart.
BEEF: This recipe calls for ground beef, but ground chicken or turkey could easily be substituted.
VEGETABLES: Mushrooms, celery, onion and garlic are must have ingredients in this recipe. In addition to these you could easily add chopped carrots, shallots, and fresh parsley if you desired.
CREAM INGREDIENTS: While this recipe calls for heavy cream and mayonnaise, you could substitute plain green yogurt and half and half to cut down on the calories and fat content.
CHEESE: A combination of mozzarella and colby jack are my favorites, but cheddar and provolone could easily be added. Really any cheese would do. Just make sure to use a combination of white and yellow. I've found it gives it the best flavor when you pair the two together.
HOW TO ASSEMBLE THIS GREEN BEAN AND TATER TOT CASSEROLE
FIRST STEP: Preheat oven to 400°. Place your tots in the bottom of a buttered 9x13 casserole dish and place in the oven and cook for 12 minutes while you prepare the other ingredients.
SECOND STEP: Cook your ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat until cooked through and browned. I usually try to get the hamburger pieces as small as I can (we don't like big chunks of hamburger in our casseroles). Drain the grease and set the hamburger aside on a plate or in a bowl.
THIRD STEP: Wipe out your skillet with a napkin to remove the hamburger grease. Add your chopped celery, mushrooms, onions, butter and 1 teaspoon of garlic to the skillet and cook until all are tender and cooked through.
FOURTH STEP: In a medium mixing bowl combine your mayonnaise, heavy cream, salt, pepper, and 1 teaspoon minced garlic. Mix well. Add your cheeses and stir again to incorporate everything together.
FIFTH STEP: Add your cooked drained green beans and cooked hamburger & onion mixture to your bowl and stir to mix everything together.
SIXTH STEP: Take your casserole dish out of the oven and put the hamburger mixture over the top of the tator tots. Spread evenly and place in the oven to bake for approximately 25 minutes.
SEVENTH STEP: You'll know it's done when the sides are bubbling and the top starts to brown slightly.

Thinking about trying this recipe. The tater tots are not listed in the ingredients. How much should be used in the casserole?

Want to make this tonight. You don't say when to add green beans? I assume they get mixed in with the hamburger mixture.

Thanks for catching that! I really need to stop blogging while the baby is sitting at the desk with me. He can be very distracting apparently, lol! I've updated the directions to reflect when you add the green beans.

LOL... that is funny. The mom likes tator tots and not the kids! I totally expected you to say they don't like veggies but instead you'll have to sneak the tator tots in. I love it!
Thanks for your comment Kim!
