Gender Reveal Cupcakes Ingredients
- Flour
- Baking powder
- Salt
- Butter - unsalted butter
- Sugar - granulated sugar
- Vanilla - vanilla extract
- Eggs
- Milk
- Sprinkles - blue and pink sprinkles
- Sugar - powdered sugar
Help your cupcakes bake evenly, and make sure they are all the same size, by using a large cookie scoop to divide the batter evenly among the cupcake liners. Then, before you add the filling, it’s important to let the cupcakes cool completely.
Sprinkles make everything more fun, including these cupcakes. For the pink and blue sprinkles on top of the cupcakes you can choose your favorite, whether that’s funfetti sprinkles, pearl sprinkles, or sprinkle your cupcakes with colored sugar. You might even try a few varieties to have a blend of shapes and textures.
If you want to make the gender reveal a surprise even for you, you’ll need some help from someone who can keep a secret. Deliver the baked and cored cupcakes to a friend and ask them to handle the filling. Then you can be just as surprised as your guests!
How to Make Gender Reveal Cupcakes
FIRST STEP: Start by preheating the oven to 350°F.
SECOND STEP: In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
THIRD STEP: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter, sugar, and vanilla extract until creamy. Pour in the eggs and mix well.
FOURTH STEP: Mix in dry ingredients in 2 batches, alternating with milk.
FIFTH STEP: Fold in the pretty blue and pink sprinkles. Mix all ingredients until well combined.
SIXTH STEP: Place cupcake liners in the 12-cup cupcake pan.
SEVENTH STEP: Bake for 25 minutes. Check with a toothpick to see if the cake part is baked through. When the cupcakes come out of the oven, let them cool completely.
To make the icing:
EIGHTH STEP: Beat the butter, salt, and powdered sugar on low until it’s all combined. Add vanilla extract and beat on medium-high speed until creamy. About 3 minutes. Beat in milk on medium-high speed for 1 minute, or until fluffy.
NINTH STEP: Place ½ cup of the plain icing in a small bowl. Stir in a small amount of blue or pink gel food coloring until the icing is the desired color.
TENTH STEP: Keep your cupcakes in the pan and cut a small hole on the top of the cupcake, right in the center. This will be filled with blue or pink icing. I used a Wilton 1A icing tip to punch a hole.
ELEVENTH STEP: Fill the hole with the icing and place the portion of the cutout cupcake back over the top.
TWELFTH STEP: Pipe plain icing on top and decorate with sprinkles before serving.
Can I make chocolate gender reveal cupcakes?
If you would prefer chocolate cupcakes, you can easily add cocoa powder to the recipe. You could even make the icing chocolate but you will have to have a small quantity of white frosting so that you can tint it blue or pink.
What else can I fill the cupcake with?
In addition to the frosting, you could also add sprinkles to the inside so that they spill out when you take a bite.
How do I make moist cupcakes?
To ensure your cupcakes are moist, make sure not to overbake them. After your cupcakes are baked, storing them in an airtight container will help them to maintain their moisture.
How to Store Gender Reveal Cupcakes
IN THE FRIDGE: Because of the butter in the frosting, these gender reveal cupcakes are best stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
IN THE FREEZER: For the best results, freeze unfrosted cupcakes and then frost them when you are ready to serve. Frosted cupcakes can be frozen for up to 3 months. Gender reveal cupcakes are best stored each in their own container so that the frosting doesn’t get squashed.
