Ingredients for Salisbury Steak Meatballs

What You'll Need for Salisbury Steak Meatballs:

For The Meatballs:

  • 1½ pounds of lean ground beef
  • ½ cup of plain panko breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup of finely diced sweet yellow onion
  • 1 large egg, room temperature and beaten
  • 3 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 tablespoons of ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons of Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon of fresh minced garlic
  • 2 teaspoons of onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon of kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon of fresh cracked black pepper
  • 1½ tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil (for frying the meatballs)

For The Mushroom Gravy:

  • 2 (0.87-ounce) packets of brown gravy mix
  • 1¾ cups of water
  • 1 (4-ounce) can of mushroom pieces and stems, drained
  • 1 teaspoon of Kitchen Bouquet seasoning sauce (optional)

If you choose to mix the meat with your bare hands, we recommend using disposable gloves. That way, it’s less messy and you reduce the risk of cross-contamination. You might also consider having a dedicated scoop for meatballs. Be sure to clearly mark the scoop for anyone to recognize.

If the mushroom pieces are too large, you can cut them in half into smaller pieces. You could also chop fresh mushrooms, such as white button mushrooms or baby portobello mushrooms.

You can substitute stone-ground mustard for the Dijon or plain prepared mustard in the meat mixture. Whichever you have on hand will work for these Salisbury meatballs. If you want a rich brown color to your gravy, you can add 1 teaspoon of Kitchen Bouquet to darken it. While optional, it adds a little something extra to your gravy if you have it on hand.

How to make Salisbury Steak Meatballs

FIRST STEP: Add the ground beef to a large mixing bowl.

SECOND STEP: Add bread crumbs, diced onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, Dijon mustard, minced garlic, onion powder, kosher salt, and cracked black pepper. Mix with either a large spoon or use your hands to mix the ingredients until thoroughly combined.

THIRD STEP: Measure out 1½ tablespoon scoops of the meat mixture. Form into round balls.

FOURTH STEP: Add the extra virgin olive oil to a 12-inch nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. If you use a 10-inch skillet, you will need to cook the meatballs in batches.

FIFTH STEP: Once the skillet is heated, add the meatballs to the skillet. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes per side, and turn to ensure even browning. Once the meatballs are completely cooked, remove them from the heat and prepare the gravy according to the package directions.

SIXTH STEP: Once the gravy has been made, stir in the drained mushrooms. Serve the meatballs and mushroom gravy with mashed potatoes or egg noodles.

Salisbury steak meatballs with mushroom gravy are the best kind of comfort food. They're perfect when you want a meal that's both satisfying and heartwarming, and you can enjoy them anytime you crave a hearty dish.
