This is one drink that you won’t find in the drive-thru lane at Starbucks. A favorite of Harry, butterbeer is a delectable wizard drink. In the books, butterbeer was the drink of choice among younger wizards and was served both hot and cold at various locations in the wizarding town on Hogsmeade.
Butterbeer is a cold, sweet, and frothy drink that tastes like a buttery version of cream soda. While there is an official version of the drink sold at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal in Orlando, you don’t need to travel that far. With this recipe, you can make your own butterbeer at home!
Whether you are planning a Harry Potter movie marathon, re-reading Harry Potter with your book group, or hosting a Harry Potter-themed party, your beverage of choice should be butterbeer. Maybe even served alongside chocolate frogs!

Make your butterbeer even more magical by serving it on a tall frosted glass mug with a fun striped straw. Serving the butterbeer in cold glasses will help the buttercream topping last longer. For an extra touch, drizzle more butterscotch into the glass before pouring the drink in.
How to Make Butterbeer
FIRST STEP: Prior to starting the recipe, chill (in the freezer) the serving glasses, pitcher, and large mixing bowl for 30 minutes.
SECOND STEP: In the large pitcher combine A&W cream soda, caramel extract, and butter extract. Gently stir with a large spoon.
THIRD STEP: In the chilled large mixing bowl add heavy whipping cream, vanilla extract, and butter extract. Beat together for 30 seconds. Add powdered sugar and continue to beat until stiff peaks form.

FOURTH STEP: Immediately add the butterscotch topping and fold together with a rubber spatula until no streaks remain.
FIFTH STEP: Fill chilled glasses with cream soda mixture. Top with the Butter Cream Topping.
SIXTH STEP: Serve and enjoy!
Cooking Tips
Chilling the large mixing bowl is key for this recipe. It will ensure that your heavy cream forms stiff peaks. Don’t skip freezing your bowl!
If using straws in your drink be careful. When you put the straw in the cream and push it down to the soda it tends to fizz up a bit. If you leave a little extra room on the top of your glass it won’t overflow when you add the straw.
If you are wanting to turn this into an alcoholic beverage for adults 21+ you can add ½ cup of butterscotch schnapps, vanilla vodka, or rum to the cream soda mixture.

Storing this Recipe
It’s best to make this butterbeer drink as close to serving time as possible.
