In addition to the peanut butter, you could also use any type of creamy nut butter you have at home, including almond butter or cashew butter. It might make for a little different consistency, but the taste and overall outcome of these delicious treats will be the same. You could also change up the vegetable and use mashed sweet potatoes instead of pumpkin puree.
A medium-sized dog bone cookie cutter gives these dog treats a cute appearance, but you can also use a traditional circle cookie cutter or a glass. How to Make Pumpkin Dog Treats
FIRST STEP: Preheat oven to 350°F.
SECOND STEP: In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine all ingredients in order and beat until well combined. Dough should look crumbly but will stick when placed into a ball.
THIRD STEP: Split dough in half and roll into a ball. Place ball of dough between two layers of parchment paper.
FOURTH STEP: First, flatten the ball with the palm of your hand, and then roll with rolling pin. The dough should be about ¾ inch thick.
FIFTH STEP: Once flattened, use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes. Carefully lift and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Repeat until all of your dough is used.
SIXTH STEP: Place in oven and bake for 10 to 12 minutes. For a crisper treat, flip over treats and cook for an additional 6 minutes or until crisp. You may need to adjust baking times depending on treat thickness and type of cookie sheet.
SEVENTH STEP: While treats are baking, heat additional peanut butter for 20 to 30 seconds in the microwave or until smooth and creamy. Once treats are finished cooking, drizzle on peanut butter.
EIGHTH STEP: Let cool completely before serving to your dog.
Can I use homemade pumpkin puree in this recipe?
These pumpkin dog treats would work with either store-bought or homemade pumpkin puree. If you are purchasing store-bought pumpkin puree just make sure that you buy pure pumpkin purée and not canned pumpkin pie filling.
Will these cookies be ok if my dog has sensitive stomach issues?
This dog biscuit recipe avoids the most common food allergies that trouble dog tummies so they should be fine. However, you know best what foods your dog has issues with. To alleviate another concern for a more senior dog, whose teeth are not what they used to be, you can break the cookies into smaller pieces or put them in their bowl with a small amount of water to soften them up.
Can I use regular flour for this easy recipe?
Whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, or almond flour all work fine for these homemade treats.
