WHAT GOES WITH HEARTY SOUP?
Does your family think that soup is “boring” for dinner? Mine does.
That’s why I like to try and pair these hearty soups and stews with a few of my favorite side dishes. I usually think of Olive Garden when I make soup for dinner.
You know about the all you can eat soup, salad, and bread sticks deal that they have going on? I think it is $9.99 per person which is WAY too expensive if you ask me, especially for a family of 5! That would cost us $50 plus their $2.75 drinks. That’s another $10 right there.
My husband has a small heart attack every time he see’s our Olive Garden bill. It’s all fun until the check comes.
That’s why I like to make my favorites at home. Here’s how I do it:
- I buy a bottle of Olive Garden Dressing at Smith’s (Kroger & Costco also have the bottles)
- Then, I head to the produce aisle and pick up a bag of already washed and prepped salad mix
- Add a can of black olives, a red onion, croutons, and pepperoncini peppers and you are set. Did I forget anything?
- Then, head to the bread aisle and pick up 2 packages of bread sticks
- Warm your bread sticks in the oven until they are nice and hot
- Melt butter and brush it over the bread sticks — sprinkle with garlic salt and then you’re ready to go!
Once you add up the total cost of the soup + salad + bread sticks your total should come out to about $30 and you can easily feed a family of 4-5!
HOW DO YOU MAKE AMAZING SOUP?
There are so many different ways to make easy soup recipes. Depending on how long you want to cook or simmer your soup, there are a few different options.
Sometimes, I prep a make ahead soup for a crowd if I’m going to a family gathering. I go ahead and cook the soup a day in advance and let the flavors really blend together. Then, when I’m ready, I heat up the soup right before it’s time to serve.
If you are looking to make a slow cooker soup for a crowd then you’ll want to start your soup 4-8 hours in advance depending on which recipe you choose to make. Just remember, when driving with a full crock pot, dutch oven, or other soup container make sure to set it on the floor and not in your lap. That way if it spills, you don’t have an emergency situation with piping hot soup in your lap.
WHAT IS A HEARTY SOUP DEFINITION?
A hearty soup is defined by how substantial and filling it is. How full is your family after they eat dinner? Are they satisfied or were they left wanting more? If they are full and have happy bellies, then it was a very hearty soup indeed!
Here are a few examples of what I consider to be a hearty soup recipe:
- Meat and potatoes soup
- Pasta with beef and red sauce soup (a.k.a lasagna soup)
- Corn chowder filled with summer vegetables soup
- Ham and vegetable soup with beans
All of the recipes on our list are hearty, easy to make, tried and true!
